Fault current analysis of earthing systems studies

In earthing studies the fault current level and the duration of the fault are important parameters in order to investigate the fulfilment of the safety criteria.

However even if we know the fault current level further calculations need to be performed in order to get the real fault current flowing into the earth electrode.

Decrementing factors depending on the local earth electrode resistance, cable or OHL supply network etc will define the final earth fault current level.

A realistic fault current flowing via the earth electrode is many times lower than the fault current level given by the network operators and therefore an overestimation of the earth electrode can be avoided. Additionally since the current in leaking through the electrode, the current density is different from point to point and therefore a resizing of the earth electrode conductors can be used, leading to cost reduction. E & B Solution has all the required software tools in order to get a very accurate calculation of the real fault current to earth in order not to over or under size the required earth electrode.
